A beautiful little gem of a church over shadowed by the museum really. Lots of exhibits and artifacts and the audio wand gives you a lot of good information.Īfter we finished the tour we were taken up to the church and it is definitely worth visiting. There was a short film about the shroud and then you explored the crypt area of the church in which the museum resides. I was less than sure - the shroud wasn't here, we're both not overly religious, what could they impart that we didn't know and how can you have a museum relating to one item of cloth.Īs it turns out they imparted a huge amount we didn't know and it is very easy to have a museum packed even in relation to one cloth.Īfter you've paid (free with Torino / Piedmont card) you are given an audio wand and you press a corresponding number to the display item. Given the history of Turin and the Shroud my wife decided she wanted to see this museum. Don't be put off by comments about the neighbourhood - I'm going back there for two weeks this summer, so it can't be that bad! Whether or not you are sceptical, it's still something famous and worth finding out a bit more about. You can't see the shroud itself but there's a full scale replica on the wall of the ground floor. Although the volunteers are some kind of confraternity, there's no preaching or trying to convince you of the authenticity of the Shroud - they refer to "the man of the shroud", rather than Jesus. Then you are free to explore the basement area, which is full of artefacts connected with the Shroud. They take you into a little exhibition, where you can look at information about the Shroud, then they show you a very informative video - you get a headset and can listen in whatever language you wish. It's run by volunteers and only costs a couple of Euro entry. The museum itself is barely noticeable I only spotted in on my second last day. There is a bus stop outside the door on the other side of the street, I think it was the Star line - it's a bus that drives in a loop around the city, and ideal if you want to go to or from Piazza Vittorio Veneto or anywhere in that area. It's a nice part of the city, you won't find many tourists it's off the beaten track but only a few hundred meters from Via Garabaldi, the buzzing shopping street. I stayed literally around the corner from this museum, and walked in both daylight and at night in perfect safety. I read a review which stated that the area was dodgy and that it wasn't safe to go to by bus.
